Coming to a new specialist practice for the first time can feel daunting, particularly if you are attending because of a breast concern, a new diagnosis, or a referral you received unexpectedly. We want your first visit to feel as straightforward and supported as possible.

This guide covers everything you need to know to prepare for your first appointment at Breast & Surgical Oncology at The Poche Centre.

Before Your Appointment

Obtain a Referral

A referral from your GP, family physician, or another specialist is required to see our surgeons. If you have been referred, your referring doctor will have sent or given you a referral letter. Please bring the original or a copy to your appointment.

If you do not have a referral and need to see us urgently, please contact our rooms and we will advise you on the quickest pathway to an appointment.

Gather Your Imaging and Reports

One of the most useful things you can bring to your first appointment is any imaging that has already been performed. This includes mammograms, breast ultrasounds, MRI scans, CT scans, and any other X-rays or imaging studies related to your current concern. If your images are held at a radiology practice, you can request a disc or digital copies in advance of your appointment.

Also bring any pathology reports, biopsy results, or letters from other specialists that relate to your current concern. The more information your surgeon has available at your first visit, the more productive the consultation can be.

Complete Your Health Questionnaire

To make the most efficient use of your consultation time, you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire when you arrive. This covers your medical history, current medications, allergies, and relevant family history. Arriving 10 to 15 minutes early will give you time to complete this before your appointment begins, or you may be sent this electronically in advance to fill out

What to Bring

Please bring the following to your first appointment:

Your referral letter from your GP or referring specialist; your Medicare card; a current DVA card or pension card if applicable; your private health insurance details (fund name, membership number, and level of cover); any relevant imaging (mammograms, ultrasound, MRI, CT scans) on disc or film; any pathology or biopsy reports; a list of your current medications and dosages; and a list of any allergies you have.

If you would like to bring a support person to your appointment, you are very welcome to do so. Many patients find it helpful to have a family member or friend present, particularly at an initial consultation where a significant amount of information may be discussed.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment with one of our specialists is a consultation, not a procedure. It is a conversation, an examination, and an opportunity to ask questions and understand your situation clearly.

Your surgeon will begin by reviewing your referral and any imaging or reports you have brought, and will take a detailed history of your current concern, your medical background, your family history, and any symptoms you have been experiencing. A clinical examination will follow, which for breast-related concerns will involve examination of both breasts and the surrounding lymph nodes. You will be given a gown and your privacy and comfort will be respected throughout.

After the examination, your surgeon will discuss their findings and recommendations with you. This may include further investigations such as imaging or biopsy, a management plan, a referral to another specialist, or in some cases, a recommendation for surgery. You will have the opportunity to ask questions at every stage of the consultation.

First appointments are typically 30 to 45 minutes in duration, though complex cases may take longer. We do not rush consultations. The time you spend with your surgeon is protected and unhurried.
